Avoid These Dangerous Toxins In Your Skincare!
Bet you didn’t think your favorite skincare products were making you lethargic, overweight, and feeling out of sorts but you would be surprised! We’ve all heard that artificial ingredients and preservatives are harmful to our health and this doesn't only count for what we eat. These same toxins are in over ninety percent of skincare products and get absorbed by our skin.
Just like a healthy diet revolves around vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, so does the well-being of our skin. That’s why we use super-food ingredients, like organic Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Coenzyme Q10, Jojoba Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Manuka Honey, Green Tea, and Kukui Nut Oil in our skin cream.
Our Biolumière Regenerating cream is the perfect therapy for a laundry list of skin woes like dry/itchy/red skin, aging and wrinkles, oiliness and acne, sun damage and stretch marks, and it helps improve skin conditions like eczema (to name a few). Even better, you don't have to worry that there are any lengthy chemicals hidden in our all-natural formula that could potentially clog your pores or contribute to feeling not 100% in the long run.
Here are a few things to keep an eye out for when you're scanning the ingredients on your latest skin care products and make up.
What Are These Dangerous Toxins?
In other articles we've talked about toxin-packed pollution and how it can affect your skin and body. We've also talked about a few sneaky makeup ingredients to watch out for as well but now we want to dive in a little deeper. What do these toxins specifically do when we absorb them through our skin care? What happens if we have too much of these toxins in our bodies? How to purify my skin care routine and detoxify? Well check it out, we're here to help!
You have likely seen us list phthalates as a culprit in other articles about dangerous ingredients and toxins to avoid. Often used in the production of plastics, the most common type of phthalate is called Bisphenol A or BPA. This chemical easily attaches itself to fat tissues and can inhibit the breaking down of fat and glucose.
If you're routinely using a skin care or make up product that includes BPA, it could be effecting your overall health. Think about it, your body naturally stores toxins accumulated in the body into fat tissue to protect you from the effects of toxins it can't fully eliminate. These toxins can build up, weakening your bodies ability to break down fat or other elements and instead, it only continues to collect.
2. Heavy Metals
Not necessarily your favorite genre of music, and definitely not something you want to be included in your skin care or makeup products. Heavy metals can be things like nickel, arsenic, mercury, and lead and have been detected in a number of large-scale make up brands. These can appear as a by-product of coloring, dyes and additives in our products, and won't be listed as an ingredient. The best way to avoid these is using products that naturally derive their ingredients and coloring from fruit and plant life.
You may recognize this as a chemical used to preserve dead bodies but it falls under a variety of names when listed as an ingredient on your skin care product labels. Used as a preservative to slow bacterial growth on products, formaldehyde can be called:
This can lead to irritation of the skin and could eventually be harmful to nasal and mouth issues as well.
These are silicone based compounds often used to smooth, soften, or moisturize skin and is regularly found in skin and hair care products. It's been determined to be an endocrine disrupter by the E.U and can have potentially dangerous effects on the nervous and immune systems. Keep an eye out for products switching up their suffixes to hide the fact that they have included siloxanes in their ingredient list. For example: -siloxane and -methicone.
Primarily used for it's ability to preserve cosmetics such as lipstick and concealer especially after exposure to the sun. This toxin has been labeled an endocrine disrupter and can lead to breast cancer, and thyroid disorders. It can also be found regularly in sunscreens.
These are just a few of the nasty chemicals and toxins that could be lurking in the ingredients list of some of your preferred skin care and beauty products. It may see like a pain but go check your shampoo, lotions, moisturizers, serums, and body washes right now to see if any of their ingredients like up with the ones above! If so, throw that stuff out!
We'll be following up with some more information on the potentially toxic and harmful ingredients that get snuck into beauty and health products on the regular soon but in the mean time, if you have any first-hand knowledge or experience on the subject - shoot us an email. We would love to hear your story!
